After an exciting final, Germany were able to defend the titel they earned 4 years ago in Kuala Lumpur, beating Australia 4:3 and becoming world champions once again.

This was the last match for coach Berhard Peters and the team were determined to honour him by winning today. The team came out aggressively at the start, taking control of the game against a defensive Australia.

Germany found the opening goal in the 18th minute through Christopher Zeller, who received the ball in full sprint at the edge of the D. Zeller went on to pass 2 defenders before flicking the ball, mid-fall, and with a bit of luck (a deflection from an Australian stick), into the goal.

Australia now increased their pressure on the German defence considerably. Bubolz first saved a short corner by Naylor in the 21st minute, only to be beaten by another just 4 minutes later, this time from Naylor.

Germany did managed to create two good opportunites to score before half time. Mowlam was able to deny the first, a short corner shot by C Zeller, while Nevado narrowly missed his chance to score in the 35th minute after a nice combination between C Zeller and B Emmerling.

Germany came out of the locker room with all guns blazing, but were brought back down to earth after just 3 minute. Crone slipped whilst defending the run into the D by Troy Elder. Elder then recieved a return pass and finished by putting the ball into the empty goal.

The Germans were momentarily unsettled by this, but it wasn't long before they came back, Nevado sending a reverse hit to really test Mowlan in goal. The fight to catch the Australian's up began in the 46th minute with Fuerste's mid-air deflection of a free hit by C Zeller on the quarter line.

Then, just three minutes they found the equaliser. Draguhn began the counter attack, joined by Scharowsky and Emmerling. Draguhn then retrieved the intercepted pass, sending it back to Emmerling who's mis-hit reverse hit lobbed Mowlam and found it's way into the Australian goal.

Finally, in the 54th minute, Germany found the deciding goal. Duckwitz played the ball to C Zeller on the Australian quarter line, who then launched an unstopable attack into the D, dribbling into the middle and sending the ball past the advancing keeper.

Naturally Australia now took control of the game, with Germany standing wel back to defend their lead.

This lead was threatened in the 66th minute when Doerner's short corner flick came off the left post.

In the dying minutes, Germany took their time, with all eyes on the clock. Crone did have to clear one serious threat by the Australians though.

The celebrations had already begun when the Germans won a free hit with just 7 seconds to go. And so it was, that a young German team won their second World Cup in a row in front of the home crowd here in the Warsteiner HockeyPark.
