Four Nations Tournament - Men -

Germany - Spain   1 : 0 (1:0)

Monday, April 17th 2006 - 14:15 in Monchengladbach

In front of 4.700 spectators Germany won the decisive game at the 4 nations tournament in Mönchen-gladbach versus European champion Spain with 1:0 (1:0). Moritz Fürste scored the decisive goal for the German victory. Björn Emmerling got the award as best individual player of the tournament. The best goalie was Juan Manuel Vivaldi.

The first action in the game belonged to the German keeper Christian Schulte who was playing instead of Ulrich Bubolz. He had to block a shot from a Spanish striker. The next chance belonged to the hosts: Matthias Witthaus started a fast attack over the left side and passed on to Carlos Nevado on the ground line. Then a fast ball to Moritz Fürste blocked out of a short distance into the right corner: 1:0 (3.). The Spanish played a powerful pressing and seemed to be dominant but they collapsed in the German defence. After 17 minutes the brilliant Björn Emmerling started the next good action for the Germans. Moritz Fürste gained the first penalty corner for the Germans. But Rodrigo Garca could safe Christoper Zellers flick out of the right angle. The Germans had fewer actions in the adverse field but the more dangerous ones: Matthias Witthaus missed, free standing in the circle a long pass (27.) and minutes later a pass just missed him five meters in front of the goal. A big mistake of Jan Marco Montag led the way for Eduard Tubau to shot but Timo Wess blocked in the last second (29.). But the first halftime belonged to the Germans who blocked the Spanish at their circle border. In the 31st minute Cortez saved a stick reflection of Matthias Witthaus. Minutes later stopped a backhand shot from Eduard Tubau on the line (33.) but due to dangerous play when hitting the ball out of the circle. Spain got their first penalty corner which was saved by Christopher Zeller.

After the break the European champion was pressing harder. Schulte saved twice against Eduard Arbos and Pol Amat (38. and 41.). Both teams now had more space and therefore it generated chances on both sides. A mistake by Christoph Menke caused the second penalty corner for the Spanish. But this time Jan Marco Montag was at the right spot to clear the ball. In the 50th minute it was again Schulte who was far enough on the outside to push the ball out. Spain now had more ball possessions. But the strong German defence neglected any chances. In the 60th minute Schulte again proofed his skills when saving a penalty corner at a one on one situation against Ramon Allegre. Afterwards there were two more chances for the German team when Witthaus deflection went far and Scharowsky hit the ball in the kits of goalie Cortez. The last chance for spain was in the 66th minute when Eduard Tubau hit a backhander five meters above the goal.
