Four Nations Tournament - Men -

Spain - India   5 : 3 (2:0)

Sunday, April 16th 2006 - 17:00 in Monchengladbach

European champion Spain won the second match at the four Nations tournament in Moenchengladbach. The Spanish team beat the Indians with 5:3 (2:0). They now lead the table just after Germany. The game between the European champion and the world champion on monday will determinate the winner of the tournament.

Rajpal Singh had the first chance as he hits the ball against the post (3.). But the European champion answered immediately with more pressure and played with quick passes. With a furious attack over the left side the Spanish gained their first goal: Eduard Tubau brought the ball past the Indian defence and passed on to Pol Amat, who blocked into the goal (9.). Minutes later Pau Quemada hits one of two penalty corners against the crossbar (11.). The South Europeans were dominant in the following minutes and the Indians hardly had goal chances. It was goalgetter Amat who could score again after 21 minutes. After a penalty corner he hits the once blocked ball into the net. After their two goals the Spanish play became slower but they could still lead the match.

The European champion started powerful into the second half and used the first chance for their third goal: Amat passed brilliantly to Tubau who converted with the backhand (37.). The Spanish put pressure out of the game so the Indians got some chances. Dilip Tirkey collapsed in keeper Alberto Gonzalez but Tushar Khandkar scored minutes later with a brilliant solo: 1:3 (44.). That was the wake-up call for the Indians who put now more pressure in the Spanish circle and on keeper Gonzalez. Especially striker Gagan Ajit Singh perks up and the Spanish defence could hardly cope with him. The Indian captain scored in the 55th minute with a powerful shot out of a wide angle. Then he gained a penalty corner which corner- specialist Sandeep Singh converted to the draw. But the Spaniards kept their balance Eduard Tubau blocked a pass of Amat into the goal of keeper Chetri who hadn’t a chance to catch the ball (63.). Six minutes later it was again Tubau who affirmed the Spanish victory with another goal (69.).
